Orbital Quintet Recording Session II at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley CA. We are currently working on “Orbital Quintet Vol. 2”. (“Vol. 1” can be heard here).
We recorded previously in May, Session I.
First off, thank you to everyone for a great night, it felt great and was a lot of fun!
I thought I’d share my set up, a first try at stereo wet/dry/wet.
Our first Fantasy session was my first attempt at a stereo set up, I got decent results but there was a lot of room for improvement, as I learned a lot about having a stereo setup and issues that can arise. So, I made some adjustments, I think the changes I made worked out, during recording monitoring and brief control room playbacks, I am very happy with the results, so we’ll see what comes out in the mix.
The main changes were two different amps, adding a dry line, pedal changes, a stereo ending chain and a good buffered stereo ABY box (huge difference). (Buffered out B, stereo in/out, Phase switch and ground lift just in case). (Thanks James at Bright Onion Pedals!)
I now have some experience with the VHT special 6 head and know more about dialing in a sound I like, also I replaced the speakers in the 2×10 cabinet, huge change!
Here is the pedalboard:
Guitar -> EP Booster -> A/DA GCS3 (Cab sim on, XLR out to board) [Dry] -> (GCS3 passthrough out to pedalboard)
Wampler EGO Compressor -> EHX Pitchfork (w/AMT expression) -> EXH Freeze -> Boss SD1 -> asm ct5 -> copilot android -> Malekko Foxtrot -> Diamond Tremolo -> CBA warped vinyl II -> EHX canyon (w/FS-5u tap tempo) -> Ditto X2 (stereo) -> TC Flashback (stereo) -> Digitech Polara (stereo) -> Boss Tera Echo (stereo) -> TC Mimiq (stereo) -> Bright Onion Pedals Stereo ABY (stereo)
1 -> Amp A -> Ampeg J-12 T Jet II reissue [Wet]
2 -> Amp B -> VHT Special 6 Head -> (2×10 cabinet*) [Wet]
* 2×10 Panama Boca Series Cabinet – (Stock speakers removed, replaced with a “WGS G10C/S 10” 75 watts 8 Ohm and a Speaker from a “Peavey Studio Pro 110″, the Teal Stripe model, which was the only other 10” speaker I had on hand.
Guitar: Eastman T386
Strings: Martin Electric SP Nickel Wound Medium .011’s.
(I like this one better for comping/harmonics)
Guitar: Eastman T186MX
Strings: .011’s Curt Mangan Fusion Matched Pure Nickel (11-48)
(I like this one better for soloing)
Notes: I used every pedal with the exceptions, I did not use the ct5, foxtrot or pitch fork on this session. I was planning on using the Nose as an expression pedal to the Malekko Foxtrot but it wasn’t working as expected, so I disconnected it. The EHX 44 is my backup amp, so it went unused and the TC Mimiq got very little usage, it didn’t sound the way I was expecting, it seemed to make my wide stereo sound more narrow…? The Wampler was on mostly the whole time, the EP booster was on the entire time.
